I was admitted into the James Scholar program the second semester of my freshman year, and I love being one. Hopefully this post gives you insight into life as a James Scholar! What is the James Scholar Program? Named after Edmund James, the fourth president of the University of Illinois, the James Scholar program is a honors track for undergraduate students. The program encourages students to take extra steps in both their academic and extracurricular activities. Incoming freshmen must be invited through admissions to participate in the program their first semester. If you arent, dont worry! There are plenty of other avenues of entry. You can self nominate yourself for entry later on in your college career. What are the benefits of being a James Scholar? There are several benefits to being a James Scholar, but structure is my favorite one. As a James Scholar, you have to earn points every semester. Both extracurricular and academic activities can earn you points. For example, a large part of my James Scholar points have come from holding leadership positions and playing for a club sports team. The best part about earning these credits is that you have to make a plan for them. Youre not allowed to pick up points as you goâ€"you have to have a clear vision of how youre going to earn each individual credit at the start of the semester. This forces you to structure your time so that you can achieve your goalsâ€"much better than stumbling around through a semester aimlessly! Another perk of being a James Scholar is that you get to register for classes early. Priority registration for James Scholars is about a month before everyone elseâ€"you have the luxury of being able to pick classes at times that work for you. Ever since Ive become a James Scholar, I havent had to wake up before 10 each morning. Thanks to priority registration, Im safe from those terrible 8 a.m. lectures. Does it take up a lot of time? It depends. If youre already participating in a lot of extracurricular activities, being a James Scholar isnt difficult. Perhaps the easiest ways to earn James Scholar credits is through clubs, intramurals, and RSOs. Academic honors projects are more consuming. You can chose to convert a normal course into an honors course by completing an extra project in the classâ€"doing this earns points as well. In the past, Ive written essays and papers on topics related to the course but not covered by the syllabus. Although each paper was about 10 pages long, it wasnt that badâ€"you have an entire semester to finish it. At the end of the day, you will be spending more time than most students on academics or extracurriculars. But, like everyone else in college, you just need to find the right balance and manage your time well. Being a James Scholar is great. You challenge yourself inside and outside the classroom, sign up for classes before everyone else, and get access to plenty of other opportunities. The program is rewarding and builds you into a well-rounded student. If youre an incoming freshmanâ€"good luck! Hopefully youre one of the lucky few selected to enroll as a James Scholar. When professional nurses are performing their nursing responsibilities and the clerical responsibilities of the facility, everything in the office will suffer, because this nurse will be doing the job of many. Many believe that the electronic medical record is the key to, not only to the patient intake process, but also a facility ability to give efficient, safe, and quality care. The Christus Santa Rosaaâ‚ ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Patient Intake Center (PIC) is staffed by nurses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These nurses are specially trained in admissions criteria. This admitting service, manned by professional nurses, offers high-level clinical expertise. With these nurses on duty around the clock, they are able to quickly take care of inpatient and outpatient admissions and transfers. These nurses handle all admissions to any of the facilities in the Christos Santa Rosa health system. This is all these nurses do day in and day out. This makes their jobs easier in that they are not expected to assist a doctor, or do anything that has nothing to do with the patient intake process. The PIC has proven that the patient intake process is more efficient if this is the sole job of the nurses. In the past, the patient intake process could be the job of whoever was available to do it; there was no one special hired for this job. Recently it has been proven that patients are moved more swiftly through to the primary care giver or even admitted as an inpatient when the patient intake process has been handled by people who were hired for only the patient intake process and have no other responsibilities (Patient intake center operates 24-7, 2009). Introduced in 1895, it was a magazine-fed, bolt-action rifle that replaced the earlier Lee-Metford. Reflective Analysis Time Management And Nursing Nursing Essay An event that was meaningful to me as a nurse happened during my clinical time at St. Michaels Hospital when I did not wash my patient before 8:00 am in order to prepare her to go to a plastic surgery appointment later on that day. My patients 10:00 am Heparin administration was delayed by 45 minutes because she was being washed at that time. This event occurred because I did not prioritize the tasks I had to complete during the day properly, and therefore I learned the importance of time management while I work as a nurse on the clinical unit. Besides me, the people who were involved in the event were the registered nurse who I shadowed, my clinical instructor, and my student nurse buddy. At the beginning of the clinical day, while the events happened, I contacted my instructor, my nurse, and my student nurse buddy. The nurse and I sat down to look at the Kardex of patients and wrote down notes on our Personal Organizational Plan (P.O.P.). On the Kardex, my patients condition was the same as yesterday except she would have a plastic surgery appointment later on that day. Usually the patients husband would visit her daily around 9:30 am and provide care which including washing the patient and helping her to perform bowel elimination. My patient preferred that nurses leave them alone while her husband cares to her. On this particular day, the patients husband had an appointment and could not visit his wife in the morning, which meant it was my responsibility to wash my patient early so she could be ready for her appointment. I verbally informed my student nurse buddy that I would need her help to wash my patient but I thought my memory was good enough that I did not have to write down this specific task on my P.O.P. Firstly, knowing is essential for nurses to manage time on the unit. The reason is if novice nurses do not know the condition of their patients, then they will not know what interventions they need to apply. More time will be spent looking up and learning about how to take care of the patients conditions. Therefore, obtaining nursing knowledge and familiarity with the daily routine care of the unit can help nurses handle their time on unit more efficiently. After an assessment is done, it can be explained to the patients who do not need immediate care that they will be taken care of shortly while the nurse attends to those with urgent needs (Waterworth, 2003). In addition, nurses should be careful of some priority setting traps. The first trap is whatever hits first which means a nurse responds to tasks that happen first instead of thinking twice and then responding. The second trap is the squeaky wheel, a patient who is able to gather the most attention from a nurse to hear his or her urgent request may not be the one w ho is the most in need. The last trap is waiting for inspiration, nurses should not be wait to be inspirited to complete a task and they should actively think about what tasks have to be done while on unit (Vaccaro, 2001). It now makes more sense to me the reasons that our instructor requires us to finish all the paperwork on Tuesday night even when we feel tired after spending the whole day on unit. In fact, completing the Diagnostic Complications Sheet and Medication sheet correspond to the knowing phase by gaining knowledge about our patients so that we can provide specific care to our patients, feel less anxious, and better manage our time on unit. Although I am only at the beginning of my teaching career, I feel as if I have many things already stowed away in my Dakine green, black, and white plaid backpack. My items are similar to Mr. Goldman’s items in that they have very little to do with the topics that I teach but are able to transform my classroom environment, stay along the guidelines of time management, and allow students to learn at their own pace. The items that I have in my backpack include: a Nerf basketball, wireless mouse, pens and pencils with colorful erasers, 3 ring hole punch, dollar store multi colored star stickers, a small bust of George Washington, and a mustache mug. Not all of these items are essential teaching tools but some of them are used so frequently that I could include them in my curriculum. The Nerf basketball is used just about every day in my math class, it helps me get volunteers for questions, provides a reward to students, and encourages others to be supportive of their classmates. The last two coincide with a game I stole from a teacher in the district high school called ‘Math-sketball’. It’s a simple game where everyone works out the problem on the board and after the buzzer counts down students need to have their answer written on their scorecard. Those students who answer correctly get to line up for a free throw shot with the basketball, students cheer each other on to make the basket and if a student misses, classmates are there with words of encouragement. This mini failure of missing a shot and the support of their classmates to try again next time is important for the students. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math students in a Resource Room at a middle school. The wireless mouse allows me to use the technology in the room without being plastered to the wall which would allow students to get distracted with other things going on in the room or outside the windows. I am able to keep close enough to my students, check their progress with the material, as well as circulate around the room to keep an eye on drifters. My 3 ring hole punch is one of my best items. I use it to keep myself organized with binders, lessons, units, tests, and other materials, but I also use it to hole punch everything that I give the students. This helps them with their organization but doesn’t stop them from misplacing their homework. I will have to find a reasonable price for microchips that I can attach to homework assignments so it is never misplaced or lost in a locker. The dollar store multi colored star stickers are used as a reward for students who are ready for class, hand in assignments, score well on tests, or help out during the class without being asked. It’s a way to keep the students active and engaged without constantly reminding them to do something or not to do something. I am sure that over my teaching career more items will be put into the backpack and that some items will replaced or taken out of the backpack, but as long as my mustache mug doesn’t crack, chip, or shatter, that will be my staple item, how else will I be able to fuel up during the day?

Monet And His World Essay I have always been interested in the impressionist style of art, especially the work of Claude Monet. When making my book selection I took this under consideration and chose a book written by Raymond Cogniat entitled Monet and His World. This lively illustrated book is written with great detail. Using explanations, illustrations, pictures and paintings, Cogniat helps to illustrate not only the life of Monet, but also the world of Impressionism, art and French society during Monets time. You are thrust into the life of this painter and his frame of mind throughout the various stages in his life. Cogniat discusses a vast variety of artistic techniques and movements. He aids us in understanding Monets motives and life behind the paintings I have learned a great deal about impressionism from this books and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in impressionist art. Monet and His World was published in 1966. The majority of the paintings are shown in black and white, which definitely takes away the beauty of them. It also makes us it harder to understand Mounts techniques of painting without chiaroscuro using light and shade in pictorial representation. I was lucky enough to acquire a colored picture book of Monets paintings called Monet, from the Crown Art Library series. It provides some basic information about Monets life but primarily focuses on explaining each painting in detail. The book opens discussing the early life of Claude Monet. He was born in Paris in the year of 1840 to a family of grocers. He spent most his childhood at Le Havre where he earliest interests in art could be traced to his aunt, Mme Lecadre who was a amateur painter. Monet lead a relatively normal childhood. By the time he was fifteen years of age, Monet had begun his artistic journey. He discovered his talent in drawing caricatures1, which he even displayed at a local shop. The shop was owned by the painter Boudin, who recognized that Monets talent far excelled caricatures. Boudin took the young artist under his wing and he eventually became the boys mentor and inspiration. It was from Boudin that Monet received his first artistic training. He began to learn about the fluid qualities of scenery, which would later lead to the creation of impressionism. Monets family did not accept his commitment to art; they wanted him to follow the family trade. He traveled to Paris where he met Pissaro and Courbet. In 1860 he drew an unlucky number from the military lottery. The family could have spared him the experience by paying for a substitute, yet they decided that he needed the reality check. He was forced to serve in North Africa for two years, until he fell ill. His familys hope was crushed, for the trip has strengthened Monets bond with nature and art. He returned home where he continued to paint luminous landscapes with Boudin and his new friend Jongkind. Paris was calling Monet, and he returned there in the fall of 1862. There he joined Gleyres studio where he began to take his work more seriously than ever before. At Gleyres studio he befriended Renoir, Sisley and Bazille. They had much in common, and upon the closing of the studio in 1863 the four decided to form their own school in the forest of Fontainebleau. There the four young men painted, became one with nature and stood undisturbed by society. They painted in plein air, where the light and wind served as models; this marked the first step toward impressionism. They soon after became acquaintance with Eduoward Manet, a controversial painter whose techniques closely resembled their own. Monet and his friends now had to participate in the struggle of success. In that year he painted with the realization that every aspect of the scene was altered in accordance with the changing light. This was to become an obsession in his later years. At last, Monet gained notoriety. He knew several important people and he became financially secure for the first time in his life. He once again began work on several series including the Haystacks7 1890-1893, Poplars 1890-1891 and the Rouen Cathedrals8 1892- 1895. With this new found luxury Monet was able to devote himself to gardening which, in turn, provided a motif for the painters last important work, the Water Lilies9 series. Monet was absorbed in this project almost exclusively from 1900 until his death. He continued his traveling throughout Europe. His son Jean married one of Mme. Hoschedes daughter in 1897. Monets eight sight began to deteriorate in 1900 after an accident and would continue throughout the rest of his life due cataracts. His wife parted in the spring of 1911 and his son Jean in the winter of 1914. Of the great impressionists, Monet lived the longest. He died on September 26, 1926 at Giverny. He watched his friends and acquaintances leave his world, and watched the world take on a significant amount of change. He spent his last years secluded from the world working on a state commission for a water-lillies mural which was to be installed in the basement of the Tuileries Garden. The impressionist had contributed a great deal to society and left a lasting impression on the world of art. He had reached the heights of his dreams and lead a fulfilling life. Impressionism sought to revitalize artistic vision through the use of colored shadows, the exclusion of black and the use of bright colors. The paintings of Monet also revolve around the fluid qualities of water and light and the importance of speed. It paved the road for many other forms of art, such as Divisionism and Pointillism. It also inspired many other artists, among these are Van Gogh anf Gauguin. Monets vision is alive and well and today. The works of Monet and the other impressionists can be found in Museums worldwide. The once-controversial form of art has become a classic which will continue to be honored as long as water-lillies grace our gardens.

Especially in today’s day and age, this proves real. Even if an act is one hundred percent in the wrong; if the price is right, that act suddenly becomes the best of deeds. It’s kind of sad to see that material things can control our train of thought. Rousseau finalizes his theory by stating that this luxury, which is the prize of the Enlightenment, is very destructive not only to morals, but political power as well. By using various David and Goliath type battles that occurred throughout history, Rousseau conveys his hypothesis. In those battles it is the luxurious dynasties such as Rome and England, that fall to people who have no clue what riches are. The only thing that those people had were lots of heart, and shear will power. This should be the way of Enlightenment. It is not the books, or paintings that won the revolution for the French, but shear will power and determination; something that no Enlightenment theory could ever give to a person. The next glitch in the Enlightenment way of thought according to Rousseau, is the destruction of military virtues by the arts and sciences. As stated above there is one thing luxury cannot buy, and that is heart. The modern soldier is one who is fulfilled with the luxury the Enlightenment brings, but what happens when that luxury runs out. The enlightened warrior is not accustomed to roughing it.
